NASA SCIENTIST URGES VALLEY LEADERS TO BRING SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH TO LIFE FOR YOUTH

FRESNO, Calif. – Tuesday, October 19, Dr. Rabi Mehta, a scientist from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), will be reassuring the Central Valley’s business and community leaders that afterschool programs offer more than just keeping kids off the streets.

“Building Youth, Building Community: A STEM Luncheon for Business and Community Leaders” is an effort to increase awareness of STEM learning, which incorporates hands-on science, technology, engineering and math curriculum into local afterschool programs. The result is having a community that can build a future workforce, reconnect students with school, improve grades and reduce the likeliness of juvenile crime.  The event will be held at the new Tower Building, 205 E. River Park Circle in Fresno, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

FRESNO ADDRESSES SUMMER LEARNING GAP FOR CHILDREN IN NEED
Enriching educational programs help kids avoid learning loss, behavioral risks, weight gain

FRESNO – June 28, 2010 –Research shows that children who lack access to enriching summer learning activities face a number of behavioral risks, a greater potential for weight gain, and they typically experience learning loss over the summer months. To combat these issues, Fresno organizations are collaborating to offer fun, educational resources to benefit local children and youth.

Through hands-on summer learning programs that blend education and fun through active learning, literacy, fitness, nutrition and the outdoors, parents and educators can help to close the summer learning gap. While this phenomenon affects all youth, the summer learning gap is more pronounced for low-income students who face access challenges to affordable summer programs. Low-income children may experience a two- to three-month setback in reading skills, while children from higher income families can make slight gains over the summer.

GUINNESS WORLD RECORD HOLDER TO CREATE 3-D MASTERPIECE

AT THE FRESNO GRIZZLIES STADIUM, WEDNESDAY, JULY 8

FRESNO, Calif. – Mark Wagner, the mastermind behind the Kids’ Chalk Art Project which set a Guinness World Record in 2008 for the largest chalk drawing, will create a 3-D chalk art masterpiece in Chukchansi Park to commemorate National Summer Learning Day.

Kids attending the game are invited to take part in creating this interactive art piece.  The artwork will be part of the exhibit showcase taking place at the Fresno County Office of Education and Central Unified School District’s National Summer Learning Day celebration at the Fresno Grizzlies game on Wednesday, July 8 at 6:05 p.m.

FRESNO CELEBRATES NATIONAL SUMMER LEARNING DAY

AT THE GRIZZLIES GAME, WEDNESDAY, JULY 8

FRESNO, Calif. – Thousands of students and parents will join the Fresno County Office of Education and Central Unified School District in celebrating National Summer Learning Day at the Fresno Grizzlies game on Wednesday, July 8 at 6:05 p.m.

During the week of July 6, more than 350 programs throughout the country will hold events to raise awareness about the importance of summer learning.

Studies show that students experience setbacks in academic skills during the summer months.  If students are not engaged in continuous learning activities throughout the summer, they fall behind academically.
