The Lights On Afterschool  Festival – October 2010

On Saturday, October 30 more than 1,000 students, family and friends converged at Memorial Auditorium in downtown Fresno to compete, perform and showcase many of the arts programs after school. Elementary school, middle school and high school students from four counties joined Fresno County Office of Education and the Central Valley Afterschool Foundation during the full-day event. The festival featured a K-8 talent show, arts/crafts/science exhibits, a high school dance competition, and more. The Lights On Afterschool Festival is designed to illuminate the importance of offering fun, educational afterschool programs for youth.

“Building Youth, Building Community” STEM Luncheon for Business & Community Leaders, October 19

More than 150 educators, business professionals and CBO leaders attended a luncheon focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning afterschool. Rabi Mehta, PhD, from NASA’s Ames Research Center was a special guest speaker and ABC30 news anchor Liz Harrison was the guest emcee. Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer was also honored with the Central Valley Afterschool Community Leadership Award. The meeting was the catalyst for a new STEM Collaborative group dedicated to furthering STEM learning afterschool, particularly in underserved rural areas of Fresno County. The event was co-produced by the Fresno County Office of Education and the Central Valley Afterschool Foundation.
